Deportivo La Coruna vs Villarreal Predictions

This is a fixture that won’t be taking place next season as Deportivo La Coruna will be in the Segunda Division again following relegation. Therefore this will be their final home game in La Liga for a while and it’s a significant one for the visitors who are battling for European qualification.

Villarreal are currently in 6th place and would clinch Europa League qualification with a win here. However they will be eager to get 6th rather than 7th. If they were to slip a place, it would mean starting next season in the 2nd Qualifying Round on 26th July, just 11 days after the conclusion of the World Cup. Therefore they should be highly motivated over these final two games as they aim to avoid a shortened summer break.

Depor will finish 18th whatever happens in the final two weekends but they have at least shown plenty of desire and haven’t looked like a side with nothing to play for. In fact, they are playing as well as they have done all season with just 1 defeat in their last 6 matches and that came against champions Barcelona.

They put in a spirited showing to draw the Galician derby in Vigo last weekend and it’s really a question of why it has taken them so long to start performing a bit better. Clarence Seedorf had little impact when he took over but is now getting results and appears to be winning the fans over even if it is a case of too little, too late as far as Depor’s survival hopes are concerned.

Despite a very poor overall season, they have avoided defeat in 56% of their home matches this term and they look capable of getting something here. The hosts should be the fresher of the two sides too given Villarreal played in midweek and were on the wrong end of a 5-1 drubbing at Camp Nou.

Villarreal had won three on the spin before that but they’ve not been massively impressive this term. They are ten points worse off than the figure they managed last season with only two games to play and they’ve been far less convincing away. They’ve managed 1.22 points per game on the road with only a 33% win percentage which isn’t great for a team that harboured Champions League hopes and have on their day shown they can mix it with the big guns.

Their current away form is terrible with just 1 win and 5 defeats from their last 8 on their travels and with Depor playing much better now, backing Deportivo Double Chance looks good here.
