Deportivo Santani vs Once Caldas Predictions

Wednesday’s Copa Sudamericana first round, first leg clash sees Paraguayans Deportivo Santani doing battle with Colombians Once Caldas. The hosts will be looking to establish an advantage ahead of the second leg.

It’ll be a special night for Deportivo Santani, as they make their first ever appearance in continental competition. Formed only a decade ago, the side made history not only for themselves by qualifying for the Sudamericana last season, but also in Paraguayan football, with no club from outside of capital city Asuncion ever having competed in either the Sudamericana or Libertadores.

Nonetheless, the match will still be played in Asuncion, with Deportivo’s regular stadium not big enough to meet competition requirements. That is something of a blow for the side, but they can still count upon home advantage, with almost all of those in attendance at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco set to support them, as they look to extend a fairly impressive home record that reads just 1 defeat from 11 matches.

Meanwhile, visitors Once Caldas have made plenty of continental appearances in the past but Wednesday’s match will represent their first since they were knocked out of the 2015 Copa Libertadores at the first hurdle by Brazilians Corinthians. Los Albos return to the continental scene courtesy of their 5th placed finish in last seasons domestic aggregate table and were one of the Colombian football’s most consistent sides over the year.

Once Caldas have also made a good start to the new campaign, taking 7 points from their opening 3 league matches but all attention is now firmly on trying to put together a real run in the Sudamericana. However, having won just 1 of their last 13 away games, it’s fairly apparent any success the side are to have in the competition is going to come from results on home territory.

Ultimately, it’d be a big surprise if either of these sides were still in the competition towards the end of the year but this particular tie will look fairly winnable to both parties. Whilst Caldas are slight favourites over the two legs, there can be no doubting that Deportivo’s prospects look fairly bright taking this match as a standalone fixture.

Indeed, at current prices, we see good value in backing the hosts on the Draw No Bet line and cannot see why they are marginal underdogs. They’ll still have the majority of the support despite the venue change, are fairly strong as hosts and with Once Caldas poor travellers, at worst the hosts shouldn’t lose the game but we think they’ll be able to edge it 1-0.
