Dinamo Zagreb vs Young Boys Predictions

It’s all to play for in this Tuesday’s finely poised Champions League play-off clash between Dinamo Zagreb and Young Boys. The winners will go straight into pot four consisting of the lowest seeds, meaning they are guaranteed to face at least one of the giants of European football in the group stage. A Europa League group place will be a decent consolation prize for the losers and in truth both teams would stand far more chance of being competitive in that competition.

The 1st Leg took place in Switzerland last week and ended with a 1-1 draw. Young Boys got off to a flying start with Kevin Mbabu scoring in just the second minute. However they would have been really disappointed to not hammer home that advantage in front of their own fans and Mislav Orsic’s leveller in the Second Half ensures Dinamo are the slight favourites to progress now.

Both sides have played one league fixture since then but inevitably they’ve had a firm eye on this match, given the lucrative nature of the group stage. Dinamo were 1-0 winners in a Zagreb derby at the weekend. The result ensured they top the Croatian league after five matches and it has been a good start to the season all round for them.

Young Boys will also be delighted with how their season is going. They already have a 7 point advantage at the top of the Swiss Super League. That’s pretty remarkable given it is only five matches old but a 5-2 win over Neuchâtel Xamax at the weekend extended their 100% record and suggests they are well capable of defending their title.

Huge Champions League nights such as this are very different to anything either team experiences in their own leagues though. That may play into Dinamo’s hands, as they are the side with more European experience and certainly more pedigree in continental competitions. They’ve made the group stage in each of their last two participation’s in this competition, despite starting out in the 2nd Qualifying Round in 2015 and 2016.

They again started at that phase this term but have really impressed with easy wins against Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Astana, two teams who have been competitive in Europe in recent seasons. They again impressed in the 1st Leg and will fancy they can finish the job here.

Young Boys have been excellent in Switzerland both last season and this but they don’t have a good record in play-off round ties in Europe. They’ve lost at this stage in each of the last three seasons, losing both legs of all the ties. They’ve at least broken that streak this term but you sense they’ve missed their best opportunity to progress, by failing to win the 1st Leg and backing Dinamo Zagreb Draw No Bet appeals.
