Doncaster vs Oldham Predictions

Doncaster Rovers are battling for promotion in League One, but are enjoying a run in the FA Cup which has seen Donny knock-out former Premier League side Charlton Athletic and Championship outfit Preston North End. On Saturday Rovers play host to League Two opposition in the form of Oldham Athletic, and the home side will be expecting a tough ninety minutes against a team that knocked-out Premier League side Fulham in the 3rd Round.

Last weekend Doncaster Rovers drew 2-2 at home with Burton Albion, with the visitors taking the lead through Brayford in the eighth minute. Donny trailed at the break and introduced Tyler Smith for the start of the second half for his debut, and the 20-year old scored two goals to turn this game on its head in the fifty-third and seventy-fifth minute. However, the hosts could not see the result out and in the final minute of the ninety, Brayford popped up with his second goal of the game to rescue a point for Nigel Clough’s men.

Mid table Oldham Athletic made the short trip to Macclesfield last weekend, where a first minute penalty from Urko Vera saw the Latics take the lead. However, in the third minute of stoppage time in the first half Smith pulled the relegation battlers back onto level terms, and early in the second half Wilson put Macclesfield in front with what turned out to be the winning goal. The frustrations of the Oldham players were clear to see and in stoppage time French midfielder Maouche picked up a straight red card and will now miss the next three league games for the League Two side.

Despite the last meeting between these two clubs ending goalless, this is a fixture that has seen both teams score in five of the last six encounters. Doncaster have only failed to score in one of their last six matches, while Oldham have only failed to score in two games during that same period, so goals are expected on Saturday. Both teams have also scored in four of Donny’s and three of the Latics last five matches in league and cup, suggesting both teams will score at least once on Saturday.

There is nothing to separate the two clubs in the form guide with each picking up three wins, one draw, and two defeats from their last six matches, but the hosts have been playing against a higher standard of opposition this season and that could make all the difference on Saturday. May has four FA Cup goals for Donny this season, while teammates Kane and Marquis have netted three each. Lang is the only Oldham player to have scored more than once in the FA Cup this season, and his last goal was the one that knocked-out Premier League side Fulham in the 3rd Round.

We’re confident that both teams will score in Saturday’s game, and have backed Doncaster Rovers to run out narrow 2-1 winners. The form of both teams has been identical over the last six matches and their recent meetings suggest it will be a very close game, as four of their last six encounters have ended in draws and the other two produced a win each for both clubs. However, with the home advantage and having played against a better standard of opposition all season long, were backing a Donny victory.
