      Dundee United vs Ayr Predictions

Hosts Dundee United will welcome a struggling Ayr United to Tannadice on Friday as the teams continue to push for promotion. Who will come out on top?

Dundee United’s attempt of returning to the Scottish Premiership after nearly 3 years away from the top division is going well so far, but the club could have hoped for more this season.

The Terrors are currently in 2nd place and are hot on league leaders Ross County’s tails, although the Dingwall side are 5 points clear and with a game in hand that they’ve yet to play. United didn’t get March off to a good start, as they lost their games against Inverness CT in the Scottish FA Cup quarter-final and then to Partick Thistle in the league. Robbie Neilson’s side needed a good run of games going into the latter stages of the season, as they had to face Ross County twice in the space of 2 weeks.

They beat the Staggies 1-0, going on to beat Alloa Athletic and Dunfermline afterwards, although the Tannadice side lost to Queen of the South at the end of March and then drew 1-1 with Ross County just last week.

Regardless of what their recent form may indicate, Ayr United have had a fantastic season overall. The Honest Men completely dominated League One last year, winning the title with ease and gaining automatic promotion.

This campaign saw them rise up to the top extremely early on in the season, but the cracks began to show over the course of the season, and the Ayrshire side lost its lead a few months ago. However, Ian McCall’s side can still make it into the Premiership, as they are currently on 50 points and in 3rd place, 6 points ahead of Dunfermline Athletic and one in front of Inverness CT- and with a game in hand.

Ayr United’s form hasn’t been too great, as they had failed to gain any points in 4 of their last 7 fixtures, losing to Dunfermline, Ross County, Falkirk and Inverness CT last week. The remaining 3 results saw the Honest Men beat Dunfermline and Queen of the South, drawing with Greenock Morton, keeping both these promotion hopefuls far from their targets.

Not much separates the sides in terms of league standings and points, as Ayr are 6 points behind Dundee United but having played 1 games less, meaning that should see the Honest Men win both their matches then they could climb back into 2nd place. However, their form hasn’t been great over the last couple of months, whilst Dundee United have been improving over the course of the season. We’re going to back the hosts to win here, with a final score of 2-1 for the Terrors as well as for Lawrence Shankland to grab a goal for the visitors.
