Eintracht Frankfurt vs Hamburg Predictions

Eintracht Frankfurt’s fall from grace continued with a 4-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich last weekend. Though the fans might be starting to feel some frustration at their league performances, Eintracht surprised many by beating Schalke a few weeks back to seal their place in the DFB Pokal final, so it’s possible that their focus might now be on winning their first piece of silverware since 1988 (also the German cup). There, boss Niko Kovac will face his future employers, Bayern Munich, and all would be forgiven for this end of season slump if he can pull a result out the bag in that crucial cup final.

Hamburg’s energetic 3-1 victory on the road to Wolfsburg last weekend – a third win in four matches (W3 L1) – has the ever-present Bundesliga side suddenly dreaming of a miraculous escape from relegation. Hamburg head into the weekend just two points behind Wolfsburg and the relegation play-off spot with two matches to go. “Der HSV” are further boosted by goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck’s recent performances since taking over the #1 position back in March. And though midfielder Lewis Holtby scored his 5th of the season in last weekend’s match – his fourth in five outings – coach Christian Titz continued to praise forward Bobby Wood’s contribution, who’s expected to keep his place in the starting XI.

So what’s worth backing here? Well, in terms of betting, there looks to be some huge value in the visitors. Christian Titz looks to have found the right formula since taking over at the club six matches back, with the removal of then core players Walace and Mavraj (see team news) whipping others into shape. Hamburg have been in their best scoring form all season over the past few weeks – “der HSV” are averaging two goals per game over their last four in the Bundesliga, a rate on par with those around the top of the table – and it’s easy to see how that has built their confidence on the pitch. Players that have been under-performing are suddenly working just that little bit harder, and their 11 match winless run against Frankfurt (D5 L6) should only spur them on more.

It would be an understatement to say that Frankfurt’s form has taken a tumble, and the side that gave teams like RB Leipzig (a 2-1 win) and Borussia Monchengladbach (a 2-0 win) a run for their money earlier this year is now losing to teams on a similar level to Hamburg. Kovac’s men have lacked that same composure at the back and their stellar 2018 home record was brought to an end against an average Hertha Berlin side last time out at the Commerzbank Arena. It’s almost as if Frankfurt look to have given up on their league campaign. The Eagles have hit an awful end of season slide, losing their last three games by exactly three goals, and with Hamburg very much focused in the fight for survival, you have to fancy their chances. Our prediction: a 2-0 Hamburg win.
