Emmen vs Groningen Predictions

Emmen have been busy in the transfer window, both in terms of letting people go and bringing in fresh faces, and will be hoping to have done enough to avoid second season syndrome. Groningen have also seen some comings and goings this summer but arguably their squad is weaker after losing young talents Chabot and Reis, and only spending a small amount of money on Lundqvist from Breda, with the rest of their incomings all being free transfers.

Emmen enjoyed a successful pre-season campaign in which they remained unbeaten in all of their seven friendlies, picking up wins against OFI, Go Ahead Eagles, Rolder Boys, and Nieuw Buinen, whilst drawing with Zwolle, Almere City, and this weekend’s opponents Groningen. Saturday’s guests also went unbeaten in pre-season, drawing twice and winning four times, so both clubs should be full of confidence heading into the opening game of the season. Groningen were the better of the two sides when they took on Emmen at the Sportpark Boerbos in mid-July, with 57% of the overall possession, more corners, and three times as many shots, yet the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The recent encounters between these two clubs and their form and performances heading into Saturday’s game suggest that the pair will draw. Emmen are unbeaten in their last four matches against Groningen and the last time these two sides met the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Emmen and Groningen are both unbeaten in their last six matches and the hosts have drawn three of their last five games, while their guests have drawn two of their last four, which is why we’re backing Saturday’s game to end 2-2.

Emmen will be hoping that new signings Marko Kolar, from Wisla Krakow, and on-loan Everton forward Shani Tarashaj can provide the goals their side so clearly missed last season, and if they do then a mid-table finish could be on the cards. Groningen have added striker Charlison Benschop from Ingolstadt on a free transfer and with previous experience in the Eredivisie, they will be hoping the target man will improve their forward-line.

We’re confident that Saturday’s game will end in a draw and have predicted a final scoreline of 1-1. Both teams enjoyed successful pre-season campaigns and, given that Emmen haven’t lost against Groningen in any of their last four matches, we’re expecting the pair to play out a close and competitive ninety minutes that will ultimately end in a draw.
