England Women vs USA Women Predictions

Having gradually improved as the tournament has progressed, England, who made light work of beating a useful Norwegian side in the quarters, will come into this huge game feeling confident. They’re going up against the highest ranked side in the world, but Phil Neville’s Lionesses have shown that they’re not to be taken lightly in France, so they’ve got every chance of upsetting the holders.

Much as they did against Cameroon, England delivered a solid performance against Norway, but they added a hint of class, scoring a couple of well-worked goals, not to mention a stunner from Lucy Bronze, who was dubbed as the best player in the world by Phil Neville after the game.

Going forward, the Lionesses continued to flex their muscles in the quarter-finals. They created plenty of chances, posting a whopping 3.29 expected goals, while they looked threatening in a variety of ways. When dictating the pace of the game, on the break and from set pieces, England looked as though they could score goals last time out. Much has been said about the scoring pedigree of the current holders, but England have shown that they’re as good as anyone when everything clicks in the final third.

While England won with a degree of comfort against Norway, USA had to dig deep against France. Jill Ellis’ women appeared to be in command when they went 2-0 up thanks to Megan Rapinoe, who has been their go-to goal-getter in the knockouts, but they never looked comfortable at the back, as France continued to create opportunities. Essentially, a lack of end-product from the tournament hosts, who ended the game with an expected goal difference of +0.15, allowed the US to progress.

Not only did USA have a slightly uncomfortable night against the French, but they looked far from spectacular against the Spanish. On that occasion, two spot-kicks were the difference for Ellis’ women, who will need to raise their game to beat a mightily determined and high-quality English outfit.

From a betting point of view, the current prices suggest that anything other than a USA win would be a surprise, though it’s very easy to feel that the Lionesses aren’t quite getting the respect that they deserve.

The quality of USA cannot be ignored, but this current England side look every bit as good, if not slightly better. In the knockout rounds, the prolific Ellen White has looked far more threatening than here opposite number Alex Morgan, while the likes of Fran Kirby and Nikita Parris have looked just as effective as Rapinoe and Heath for USWNT.

All in all, England have done more than enough to be a good bit shorter in the betting, so backing the Lionesses to send the holders packing offers punters a slice of value.
