Eupen vs Gent Predictions

Eupen have lost their opening three games of the campaign and conceded thirteen goals in the process, so this weekend when they play host to Gent, just keeping the goals conceded down to three would make for a marked improvement. The visitors have won one, lost one and drawn one so far this season, but will be expecting to pick up another three points against the divisions bottom club on Sunday.

Eupen travelled to Zulte-Waregem last weekend and were hit for four by their hosts. Veteran midfielder and former Belgium international Thomas Buffel scored twice in three first half minutes to hand the home side an unassailable lead at the break.

Faik added a third goal soon after the restart as the Eupen defence once again went missing when put under the slightest of pressure. In stoppage time Marcq added a fourth and final goal for the home side, who dominated possession with 58% and almost three times as many shots on target as Eupen during the ninety minutes.

All Eupen can do is return to the drawing board following these heavy defeats and manager Claude Makélélé can only hope that his defence find an ounce of the courage, fortitude, and discipline that he alone oozed during a glittering playing career.

Fresh off the back of a 1st leg victory over Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok in the Europa League, Gent headed to Waasland-Beveren at home in the league and ran out convincing 4-1 winners. A single strike from Ukraine’s Yaremchuk was all the first half produced, but it did hand Gent a lead at the interval. Verstraete made it 2-0 via the penalty spot in the seventy-seventh minute, but Vukotić pulled a goal back five minutes later for the visitors.

The next goal was always going to prove key to the final result, and just a minute after conceding, Canada’s David restored Gent’s two goal cushion and even added another goal in the final minute to wrap up a 4-1 win.

Gent have the 2nd leg of their Europa League qualifier at home before they travel to Eupen, but will still be the bookies big favourites to beat their hosts on Sunday. Canadian striker Jonathan David is just 18-years old and playing his second professional season with Gent, but already leads the way in front of goal with three strikes in the league.

We’re confident that over 2.5 goals will be scored when these two sides clash on Sunday, and that Gent will run out 2-1 winners. Four of Eupen’s last six matches have produced over 2.5 goals, while two of Gent’s last four matches have produced over 2.5 goals. Four of the last six meetings between the two clubs have ended with over 2.5 goals being scored, and we’re expecting more of the same this weekend.
