Everton to Win

Reason for tip

Everton are unbeaten in their last 17 home league games against Southampton and should be able to extend that by making it five Premier League defeats in a row for the Saints, who lack the quality of a top flight side.

Everton 2-1

Reason for tip

Both teams have scored in five of Southampton’s last seven games so they should be able to at least get on the scoresheet, albeit in a fancied 2-1 Everton victory.

Everton vs Southampton Predictions

  • Southampton have lost their last six league matches
  • Both teams have scored in five of Southampton’s last seven games
  • Everton are unbeaten in 17 home league games against Southampton, winning 12 of them.

Struggling Lampard needs victory

Everton stayed up by just four points last season and look set for another campaign battling against the drop after a downturn in form has left the Toffees in 18th position. Frank Lampard has come under severe pressure as his side have won just three games this season.

Two of those wins have come in front of the Goodison crowd and they will be hoping that their fans can get behind them in what is a crucial clash in the relegation battle. However, there was discontent in the stands as they were beaten 4-1 by Brighton last time out so they will need to start well to get their supporters on side.

Lampard’s men will need to find the net with more regularity however, they are the second-lowest scorers in the division behind Wolves and they need the likes of the fit again Dominic Calvert-Lewin to start chipping in with goals if they are to be successful in this game and in the season as a whole.

Jones in trouble already as Saints boss

Nathan Jones has found life as a Premier League manager to be something of a poisoned chalice since taking over as Southampton manager after the departure of Ralph Hasenhuttl, the former Luton boss has lost all four of his league games in charge of his new side.

The Saints are starting down the barrel of a relegation battle, particularly after back-to-back defeats to newly-promoted sides Fulham and Nottingham Forest respectively, their total of 12 defeats is the most of any team in the Premier League.

Southampton do go into this game on the back of two cup wins, including a shock EFL Cup victory over Manchester City. They should take some confidence from that but it also means they have played twice since Everton’s last game and fatigue could be a factor for the visitors.

Head-to-head gives Toffees edge

Both of these sides have struggled recently and three points will be a huge step in the right direction for either side if they are to pick them up. Despite their recent poor form, Everton do have the talent in their squad to make it five league defeats in a row for Southampton.

The Toffees also have an impressive record against Southampton at Goodison Park, they are unbeaten in 17 home league games against Southampton, winning 12 of them. The home crowd may just be enough for Frank Lampard’s side to pick up a narrow win, with the 2-1 correct scoreline also fancied.

  • Four of Southampton’s last five Premier League games have featured three goals or more
  • Backing BTTS and Southampton’s opponents has been a winning bet in four of their last five Premier League games
