Melgar vs San Lorenzo Predictions

Tuesday’s Copa Libertadores group stage action sees Peruvians FBC Melgar doing battle with Argentines San Lorenzo. The hosts will be looking to make use of their home advantage in order to claim all 3 points.

Melgar have done well to even reach this point of the competition, with few having fancied them to navigate two tough qualification round ties. Nonetheless, the Peruvians did extremely well to knock Chilean powerhouse Universidad de Chile out 1-0 on aggregate, prior to dispatching of Venezuelans Caracas via a 3-2 margin over two legs.

It’s fair to say the hosts aren’t really expected to go any further than the group phase but they do have one thing on their side; altitude. Indeed, situated 2,355 metres above sea level, the Estadio de la Universidad Nacional San Agustín subjects visitors to harsh, gruelling conditions and having won 17 of their last 23 home games, Melgar are clearly a force to be reckoned with on their own patch.

Meanwhile, San Lorenzo boss Jorge Almiron may have made a historic run to the Libertadores final with Lanus in 2017, but he’s not finding life easy in the Ciclon dugout. Indeed, despite having taken over in early November, Almiron still hasn’t won a game whilst in charge of the team and pressure is beginning to mount on him.

Make no mistake, this San Lorenzo side is nowhere near as strong as the one that lifted the Libertadores back in 2013 and serious improvement will have to be found if they are to even make it out of the group. Rock bottom of the Argentine Superliga, the visitors have next to no momentum behind them and having not won any of their last 15 away games, confidence cannot be high coming into this game.

Ultimately, this is a match Melgar will be viewing as winnable and 3 points will certainly be their target coming into the game. If they are to advance from the group, home showings are going to be crucial and that makes this game a crunch one for them.

All things considered, we feel that backing a home win here provides good value and is exactly where our money is going. Melgar have won both of their home games in the competition so far this year and with San Lorenzo in such wretched form, it’s hard to envisage them dealing with the altitude and a 1-0 home win could well be on the cards.
