FC Volendam vs Sparta Rotterdam Predictions

Sparta Rotterdam ended 2018 on a sour note with a 2-0 defeat at Jong Ajax, and Henk Fraser’s side have so far failed to get going again in the New Year. Three draws on the spin have seen them drop to 4th in the table, and they’re now six points behind leaders Twente heading into match day 23 where they take on a resurgent Volendam side who’ve won three of their last four.

Sparta would have hoped for much more than three points from fixtures against Cambuur, Roda JC and Telstar to kick off the New Year, but that’s the meagre tally they’ve accrued following a disappointing 1-1 draw at 16th placed Telstar last week.

The six-time Dutch champions were going great guns earlier in the campaign in their mission to return to Eredivisie at the first time of asking, and bagged the insurance of a Play-off place early doors after topping the Period 1 standings.

But their stuttering away form has really hurt them since, and that stalemate in IJmuiden means it’s now two wins, six draws and three defeats for Rotterdam on their travels this season.

An average of just 1.09 points per game on the road is simply not good enough for any team to maintain a challenge for automatic promotion in this league, and although Sparta got away with it for some time due to their excellence at home and the inconsistency of their rivals, they’re now suffering as the likes of Twente and Den Bosch continue to string lengthy winning and unbeaten runs together.

Sparta’s ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ performances have made their fixtures increasingly difficult to assess from a betting perspective, but it’s clear that they’re poor value for this Friday’s encounter with 12th placed Volendam at a touch of odds-on.

Aside from the fact they’ve failed to win their last five matches outside of Het Kasteel, hosts Volendam have won three of their last four Eerste Divisie games and they’re currently above four of the five teams that Sparta have recently failed to beat away from home.

Volendam turned over defending champions Jong Ajax 1-3 at Sportpark De Toekomst last week which was an extremely impressive result considering Jong had won seven of their ten fixtures in Amsterdam going into that clash, and it also demonstrated Palingboeren’s resilience following a 1-3 defeat at home to FC Eindhoven the previous week.

It goes without saying that Volendam have themselves been unreliable for punters this term; they’ve bounced up and down around mid-table for the majority of the campaign and they’ve only managed a fair haul of five victories from 11 matches at Kras Stadion.

Nonetheless, they’ll feel Sparta are there for the taking this week with all the pressure seemingly on the visitors, and Hans De Koning’s men will be buoyant following that fantastic triumph on match day 22.

The hosts obviously have their own agenda in terms of pursuing a Play-off place this term, and we think on balance they warrant support in this fixture as they could move into the top nine with a victory.

Sparta were cosy 2-0 winners in August’s reverse fixture, but as we know they’re a tamer beast outside of Rotterdam and Volendam are overpriced as a result of this and their own strong recent form. De Koning’s side can put another dent in Sparta’s promotion hopes here and a 2-1 correct score appeals alongside our main match bet.
