Ferencvarosi TC vs Dinamo Zagreb Predictions

When going away in such two-legged ties, teams generally have two objectives; 1. Avoid defeat. 2. Grab an away goal. Fortunately, Ferencvaros managed to complete both of those objectives in Croatia last week, so Tuesday’s hosts will fancy themselves to finish off the job in front of a home crowd. Then again, the visitors certainly won’t be too disheartened, as they’re still very much in it.

Hungarian giants Ferencvaros were slightly fortunate to leave return home without being behind; they were outperformed in terms of shots, shots on target and expected goals, though they still produced moments of promise, while their performance wasn’t overly disappointing. As they conceded 1.67 expected goals and surrendered 24 shots, nine of which hit the target, Serhiy Rebrov’s men could’ve had few complaints if they’d conceded twice, though despite enjoying some good fortune, they ultimately resisted well.

Zagreb were the better team last week, there can be no denying that, but they weren’t so dominant that you’d fancy them to get the job done in Hungary, or at least it’s questionable as to whether they should be favourites on the road. After all, the Croatians emerged with just a modest expected goal difference of +0.58.

However, the bonus that the Croats have is that they’ve already got used to playing on the break, as they allowed the Hungarians to dominate possession a week ago. While giving away two thirds of the ball at home isn’t always a good idea, under these circumstances, it might just have been a master stroke from boss Nenad Bjelica.

We could assume Zagreb will find it tougher to create away from home, but as they almost adopted the stance of an away side last week, creating most of their chances on the break, it’s easy to envisage the Croats delivering a similar level of attacking display.

For those looking to get involved financially, ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’ looks like a viable option at the current prices. In their two home games, Ferencvaros have offered a good amount going forward, averaging 2.5 goals for and 1.58 expected goals for, though when they came up against decent attacking opposition (Ludogorets), they looked anything but secure at the back, as they conceded 14 shots and 2.16 expected goals for. Add in the fact that Zagreb offered plenty going forward last week, coupled with the fact that they posted a respectable 1.42 expected goals for when scoring twice away from home in the previous round, and it’s easy to feel that the possibility of a high-scoring game has been slightly underestimated by the early market.
