Ferencvaros vs Maccabi Tel Aviv Predictions

Thursday’s Hungarian hosts made it further than this round last year, as they overcame Jelgava, only to be dumped out by a rampant Midtjylland side shortly after. With that defeat no doubt still be in their memories? Thomas Doll’s men will have their sights set on improvement, though they could struggle to replicate last year’s achievement, let alone beat it. The hosts are up against a Maccabi Tel Aviv team who’ve been regulars in the Europa League group stages in recent years, so progressing will be no easy task.

Unlike the hosts, Maccabi are an experienced Europa League side. The visitors come into this fixture having qualified for the final competition five times since 2011. They were unable to make it out of their group last season, though they did earn a few respectable results before exiting, beating the likes of Villarreal away from home. Against a Ferencvaros team who always seem to bump into a useful side in qualifying, the visitors will fancy their chances.

As one of Hungary’s biggest clubs, Ferencvaros are no mugs, though they were exposed defensively when attempting to qualify for this competition last season, so it would be no surprise whatsoever if they were to struggle at the back against a Maccabi side who scored in each of their eight qualifying matches last season.

However, the Hungarians also proved that they can be a force going forward on the continent when scoring in each of their four qualifying matches last season. It didn’t take too much to score against Latvian side Jelgava, but they impressed offensively when scoring twice at home against one of the best teams in Denmark. A similar performance on this occasion should be enough for Ferencvaros to hurt their opponents, though expecting them to do so whilst keeping things tight at the back may be foolish. Since 2014, Doll’s men have kept just one clean sheet in six home qualifiers. They’ve only failed to score once during that time too, while, somewhat unsurprisingly, ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ has landed in four of those of six.

As they did last season, the hosts will have a go at Maccabi, though they’re unlikely to keep things tight in doing so. The visitors scored in each of their four away qualifying matches last season, so they ought to feel confident of doing some damage against a Ferencvaros team who tend to find clean sheets hard to come by, regardless of the competition.
