Fiorentina vs Chievo Predictions

Fiorentina finally get their season underway this weekend, and they start the campaign at home to Chievo. The Viola are hoping to build on their eighth placed finish last term, and a little more consistency is going to be key for them. It starts off with their home form, and this clash with the Flying Donkeys is one they ought to win. While the visitors put in an impressive performance last weekend, are they going to bounce back with a win or the road, or will their troubles from last season carry over?

Fiorentina were all set to kick off their season in the Europa League this term, until AC Milan went to court. The Rossoneri had their European ban overturned, leaving the Viola out of European competition. Their eighth place finish wasn’t quite enough, but they’ll be hopeful of a return to European competition this season. They’re set to challenge the likes of Atalanta and Torino for a place among the top seven, and the hosts will be looking to start that challenge with three points here after sitting out the opening weekend.

Chievo kicked off the Serie A season in style, threatening to cause a massive shock as they took a 2-1 lead over Juventus in Cristiano Ronaldo’s debut. The Gialloblu were ultimately beaten 3-2 in that clash, but they will have taken heart from their good display. However, it’s one thing for them to turn up at home, but can they produce that kind of display on the road?

The visitors lost all of their meetings with the top eight last season, while they claimed a single point at the top 10 teams. This ground in particular is one which they struggle at, having lost their previous eight visits. They’ve scored a single goal in six trips, and we expect them to have another tough time away to a top side, with Fiorentina making some improvements to their side this summer.

Unsurprisingly, the hosts are heavy favourites for the points in this clash. They come in to Sunday’s match a little too short for us to back them, but there’s still value around on this one. Fiorentina to lead at the end of each half is our pick, given that it has landed in six of the last seven clashes between these two at this ground. Chievo have scored 11 of their last 13 goals in Serie A in the second half of their games, so they shouldn’t cause much trouble early on, when we expect the hosts to get a strong foothold in the game.
