Fortuna Dusseldorf struggle against Bundesliga’s big boys

Fortuna Dusseldorf have drawn ten of their 30 Bundesliga games this season and must turn some of those stalemates into wins if they are to retain their top-flight status.

Fortuna, who occupy the relegation playoff place, are just three points clear of second-bottom Werder Bremen and have won only two of their 13 league games this calendar year.

Since football resumed in May, Fortuna have lost only one of their five games but three of those have resulted in draws – which includes at home to Paderborn – and their defeat was a 5-0 thumping at Bayern where they were hopelessly out of their depth.

Worryingly for Fortuna fans, Uwe Rosler’s men have lost all eight games they have contested against top-five opponents this season and all of those contests have featured at least three goals.

Fortuna were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Hoffenheim, who had Benjamin Hubner sent off after just nine minutes, last weekend and they are unlikely to fare any better against a free-flowing Dortmund side who trounced them 5-0 earlier in the campaign.

Dortmund’s title hopes look all but gone as they trail Bayern by seven points but we predict they can move one step closer to securing second with a comfortable victory at Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Dortmund have won 11 of their last 13 league contests, their only defeats came against heavyweights Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen, and they have been extremely reliable against Bundesliga’s lesser lights.

Lucien Favre’s side were in an unforgiving mood at rock-bottom Paderborn in their last away outing as they ran out emphatic 6-1 winners and this looks like another fairly straightforward task.

Dortmund have won their last four away league games, netting 12 goals in the process, and with English talisman Jadon Sancho back to form and Erling Haaland set for his return, they should go in again against a Fortuna side who have shipped 26 times in 15 matches on home soil.

Goals could flow at both ends

There have been 59 goals scored in Dortmund’s 15 away games (3.93 per match) while Fortuna have seen at least three goals in each of their last four outings.
