      Fortuna Dusseldorf vs Wolfsburg Predictions

Fortuna Dusseldorf’s 19/20 campaign started as remarkably as their 18/19 season ended. Their 3-1 victory at Werder Bremen was their first opening day win in six years and coach Freidhelm Funkel has USA international goalkeeper Zack Steffen to thank for that. Steffen produced a league-high 10 saves to be awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ in that game, and no Bundesliga ‘keeper has saved more shots (20) so far this season.

However, that only really highlights the defensive frailties which led to back-to-back defeats in Dusseldorf’s last two games against Leverkusen and Frankfurt. These losses put a dampener on things before the international break, from which Dusseldorf were only given more bad news. Midfielder Alfredo Morales made his long-awaited return to the USA national team only to suffer an injury which has ruled him out for a number of weeks.

Wolfsburg are hoping to return to winning ways after their 100% start to the 19/20 campaign was brought to an end by promoted side Paderborn before the international break. It has been a great start for boss Oliver Glasner, who previously managed at Austrian side LASK Linz, to remain undefeated after four competitive games (one DFB Pokal and three Bundesliga), and he’ll be need his Dutch stars to be on form again this weekend.

Wout Weghorst – who bagged 17 goals in 18/19 – and Josip Brekalo have both found the back of the net three times over their last four outings domestically and should have good memories of facing Dusseldorf from last season. Weghorst scored four goals, including a hat-trick in a 5-2 win, and Brekalo scored one over the two appearances against Funkel’s side last season.

Going off how Dusseldorf and Wolfsburg have started the season, you’d have to like there to be goals in this game too. Dusseldorf’s attacking record and lack of defensive form was the perfect combination for the goals markets last season and it has been Wolfsburg’s attacking prowess that has surprised most so far as well – in fact, only four sides have scored more than Wolfsburg.

Both forward lines hold plenty of goalscoring experience – we mentioned Weghorst from Wolfsburg, but Dusseldorf’s own Rouwen Hennings has found his feet with five goals across his last competitive outings – and with Dusseldorf under the same management as last season, it’s reasonable to assume that their 18/19 stats are representative too – over 2.5 goals were scored in 74% of their matches last season.

Dusseldorf haven’t been the better side statistically in any of the matches so far and expected goals (xG) even shows that theywere ‘lucky’ in their 3-1 opening day win away to Werder Bremen. Wolfsburg are in strong form and have a really good record against them (W4 D2), including 5-2 and 3-0 wins last season, so we do like them for the win on Friday. And with Funkel’s side conceding two goals per game on average, we’re backing Wolfsburg to win 2-1.
