Gazelec Ajaccio vs Lille Predictions

Nobody gave Gazelec Ajaccio a chance when they were promoted to Ligue 1 last season. They came into the top flight having been promoted three times in the past five seasons and occupying a 6,000 capacity stadium barely fit for purpose.

Granted, they are in relegation trouble as we approach the end of the season, but to their credit they have hung in there and are still in with a good chance of extending their stay in Ligue 1.

They have only lost two of their last seven Ligue 1 matches, with four draws and one win making up the rest of their results. This has allowed them to keep pace with those teams just outside the drop zone, and they are currently occupying 18th place with just a two point gap between them and Reims above them.

But avoiding defeat on Saturday will be tough for Gazelec Ajaccio. The visiting Lille are in excellent form and have won five matches on the bounce in Ligue 1, and they will be looking for a 6th on Saturday as they continue their push up the table and prepare themselves for their Coupe de la Ligue final against PSG next weekend.

Three of these wins have been on home turf though, and away from home Lille have only won two of their last seven in all competitions. Gazelec Ajaccio certainly shouldn’t be written off just yet.

But Lille also shouldn’t be written off. They are in very high spirits and are still in with a shout of making a huge success of their Ligue 1 season. They may be in 7th position, but the re only six points adrift of Lyon in 2nd.

Lille’s season has largely been based around trying to keep a tight ship at the back, and neither of these teams are particularly good going forward. This has resulted in a fair few games where only one team has got on the scoresheet. Gazelec Ajaccio have only seen both teams score in two of their last seven home games, while Lille have seen at least one team keep a clean sheet in six of their last nine away days.

This makes odds of 3/4 for Both Teams Not to Score look good value to me, and I’m backing a narrow 1-0 win for Lille at 11/2.
