Gefle vs Varberg Predictions

This is a huge game at the bottom end of the Swedish second tier. Gefle currently sit just one place off the bottom and are two points off Varberg in the relegation play-off place. Defeat for the hosts would be disastrous and would see them cut off slightly in their battle for survival.

It’s fair to say the season hasn’t exactly gone to plan for either side so far and worryingly it seems to be getting worse rather than better. Gefle narrowly beat the drop last term but if anything they appear to have regressed since then. They’ve been particularly poor in front of their own fans with the division’s joint worst home record.

Varberg’s story is a similar one. They finished level on points with Gefle last term, avoiding a relegation play-off only on goal difference. They may be the higher of the two teams currently but only marginally so and there is plenty to concern coach Joakim Persson but things will look a lot better if they win this.

Overall they will fancy they can get a good result here. Both sides are in pretty shocking overall form but Varberg’s last two performances at least hint that they might have turned a corner. The first came in the form of a 3-3 draw against 2nd placed Helsingborg, while they held mid-table GAIS to a 2-2 draw last time out. They’ve only lost by more than a single goal once since the opening day of the season so they have at least been competitive.

That’s more than you can really say for their opponents. Gefle have been on the wrong end of a few hammerings and not always even against good sides. Their last 5 matches include 5-1 and 4-2 home defeats against bottom half opposition. That should certainly encourage the visitors here and they will sense this is a game they can win.

Gefle’s average of 0.57 points per home game is a dire one and they’ve now gone 10 games without a win in the Superettan. It’s just 1 point from their last 6 home games now, with the only win they’ve managed this season in front of their own fans coming against bottom club Varnamo, the only side below them.

This is a meeting of two poor sides but Gefle do little to justify their status as favourites and there may be some value in backing Varberg Draw No Bet.

Going for Varberg & Both Teams to Score could also be worth a flutter. 4 of Gefle’s last 5 home games have seen them lose despite scoring.
