Genk vs St Truiden Predictions

They may have been playing on their travels first time out, though that didn’t stop Genk from scoring four goals on their way to a resounding match-day one win. After such a pleasing result, Philippe Clement’s men will be looking to continue moving on up by beating St. Truiden at Cristal Arena on Sunday evening.

Three competitive matches, three wins, 13 goals scored, it’s fair to say that Genk have flown out of the traps this season. They were never going to be overly tested in their Europa League qualifier, though they got the job done well, both home and away, while they hacked up at Daknamstadion last weekend, beating Lokeren by four goals to nil. With that behind them, the hosts ought to feel confident ahead of a match against a St. Truiden side who did anything but set the world alight last weekend.

Last season wasn’t exactly a major success for Genk, who eventually finished fifth, while they weren’t exactly prolific against the lesser teams either. Clement’s men faced opposition who finished outside of the top six on ten occasions at home, though they only claimed four victories. What’s more, they only kept four clean sheets in such fixtures. This weak record against the lesser teams doesn’t bode well, at least not for the hosts. That said, what went before is now largely irrelevant, while St. Truiden aren’t exactly known for being the toughest team to face.

Unlike their hosts, who won with plenty in hand last weekend, St. Truiden huffed and puffed but ultimately failed to blow Cercle Brugge’s house down on match-day one. By being presented with a home match against a newly promoted team, Marc Brys’ men appeared to have the perfect opportunity, though they weren’t able to take advantage. Defensively, they didn’t come under the greatest amount of pressure, though their attacking efforts were somewhat lacklustre. A better effort will be required, both in terms of creativity and end-product, if they’re to get an improved result on Sunday.

During the regular campaign last season, St. Truiden’s efforts when facing top-six teams away from home yielded mixed results. They beat Anderlecht, scoring three goals in the process, drew against Liege, Genk and Charleroi, while they lost against Brugge and Gent. Aside from that victory against an under-performing Anderlecht, Truiden struggled to impose themselves against the better teams, while they probably should’ve lost more than the two that they did against top-six teams.

The form shown by both last season would suggest that this may be a relatively close game, though judging by the starts that the pair have made this season, it would be a shame if Genk weren’t able to come out on top. The hosts are further along in terms of preparations, while they have more about them offensively.

That extra quality in the final third can see the hosts through to a routine victory, though they may not run away with proceedings against a St. Truiden side who won’t be too adventurous tactically. Backing ‘Genk to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’ offers a slice of value in a game where little else makes any appeal.
