Genk vs Waasland-Beveren Predictions

Last season saw Genk fail to land a blow in the title race, though the early part of this campaign would suggest that they’re ready to do much better in that respect. The hosts come into this match having won each of their last five in all competitions, while they’ve only failed to collect maximum points in one of their four league matches. Only a win will do when they welcome a poor Waasland side to Cristal Arena on Sunday evening.

To say that Genk have started the season well would be something of an understatement. Sunday’s hosts are absolutely flying at present; they’ve been playing some exciting attacking football, and regardless of who’ve they’ve played of late, they’ve scored goals with ease. Having notched three times in a comfortable league win last weekend, Genk come into this match having scored five in victory over Brondby in the Europa League. With lots of momentum behind them, Philippe Clement’s men should fancy their chances of yet more attacking joy against a Waasland side who’ve not exactly defended well this season.

Aside from the fact that they’re winning games, what’s really been impressive about Genk is how they’ve looked to exploit teams who’re weak at the back. Charleroi didn’t defend well when they visited Cristal Arena and Genk made them pay, while much of the same can be said for every other game that Clement’s men have played this season. In all competitions, Genk have played nine matches and in only one of them have they failed to score more than one goal. They’ve scored at least three in five of the other eight.

While Genk have thrived offensively, Waasland have floundered defensively. They conceded twice against Waregem on the opening day, and really ought to have conceded more, while they could do little to prevent Gent from notching four against them recently. What’s more, they shipped twice against a poor St. Truiden side last time out. Genk have shown a lot more offensively than any of those teams, so such form certainly doesn’t bode well for the visitors, who’ve conceded the third highest number of goals away from home in Belgium’s top flight this season.

From a betting point of view, the hosts are easy to side with, though backing them to win represents little value at the prices. Instead, ‘Genk to Score Over 2.5 Goals’ gets the nod. Against a poor back-line, the hosts, who made light work of both creating chances and scoring goals this season, ought to find it relatively easy, and with them already in a secure position ahead of their next Europa League trip, they can afford to make sure that they record another convincing win.

A repeat of either of their last two performances, both of which saw them net at least three times, would likely see the hosts run riot against a visiting team who’re finding it tough to defend.
