Genoa vs Empoli Predictions

Genoa start their Serie A season on Sunday night, as they welcome newly promoted Empoli to the Marassi. Can they start off with a victory after sitting out the opening weekend, or will the visitors build on their win from last week? The head here looking to continue a strong start after winning Serie B, but their away form could well decide their campaign. Are the visitors going to have more issues on their travels, or can they surprise the Rossoblu and add to their points tally early on?

The hosts finished brightly last season, after looking like relegation fodder in the early weeks. Genoa have a horrible 2017 with some poor results, but they managed to turn things around late in the month, before picking up results when it mattered during two solid spells in the second half of the campaign. They did just enough to stay up, but the Rossoblu will be expected to kick on this term. They finished 12th due to the low standards in the bottom half last term, but a similar approach this season could land them in relegation trouble.

Empoli are out to avoid the drop after arriving from Serie B, after spending just a single season in the second tier. They went down in 2017 with a side who struggled to create chances. A year in the second tier managed to turn them in to a more adventurous side, but it remains to be seen how that’s going to translate to their away trips in Serie A. They may have started with a win, but this visit is going to tell us where Empoli stand ahead of the new campaign.

The visitors had a poor away record in the last season they were at his level. They lost 63% of their matches on the road in 2016/17, and their good Serie B form can’t quite cover that up. In the time they were away, Genoa have made strides to move back up the table. They’ve got to be targeting victories at home to the newly promoted sides, as that’s how the Rossoblu managed to stay clear of danger last season.

Genoa managed to win at home to four of the bottom five, which accounted for 67% of their total wins at home last term. They will be out to shade this clash with Empoli, especially given the recent record between the pair. Genoa have won two of the last three meetings here, and they’ve won three of their last five matches overall. With that in mind, we’re backing a Genoa win here, while we see a narrow 1-0 margin going the way of the hosts.
