Gillingham vs AFC Wimbledon Predictions

  • Gillingham are now unbeaten in no less than 15 League 1 matches, seven of which they’ve won.
  • Only three League 1 teams have conceded less shots on target per 90 minutes than Gillingham at home this season.
  • Wimbledon are League 1’s second-worst team in terms of shots on target conceded on the road.
  • This season, Gillingham have won 100% of their home matches against teams that currently reside in the bottom eight.

Gills march on

Gillingham extended their remarkable unbeaten run on Tuesday evening, as they secured a 0-0 draw away against Lincoln. They may not have been firing on all cylinders offensively on that occasion, but Steve Evans’ men were once again solid at the back, while they did another good job of restricting their opponents, recording a fourth clean sheet in six matches.

Being tough to beat is what Gillingham are now all about. They don’t often go crazy in terms of goals scored, scoring more than once in just four of their last 11, but they’ve become very, very good at stopping teams from playing. The Gills have conceded a single goal or less in 15 of their last 17 League 1 matches. They’ve kept an encouraging nine clean sheets during that time.

In addition, Evans’ men have an excellent home record against bottom-eight teams at home, winning five out of five, scoring 14 goals and conceding just two in the process.

Wimbledon struggling for wins

While the Gills continue tick along nicely, Wimbledon are struggling to get going. They’re winless in seven and have now gone just over 180 minutes of League 1 football without finding the net, which isn’t exactly ideal against a side that has been doing an excellent job of keeping teams at bay.

Playing away from home has been an issue for Wimbledon, who’ve won just two of their 16 travelling matches this season. They’ve lost 12 of the other 15. Against top-half opposition, they’ve done particularly poorly, losing eight out of nine. They have however scored in seven of those eight, but that’s little consolation given that they’ve conceded multiple goals in all but one of their away matches against teams that currently reside in the top half.

Opportunity for the hosts

Given what we’ve seen from this pair, this is a game that can only be categorised as a massive opportunity for the hosts to collect an important three points. Punters can profit by siding with ‘Gillingham to Win & Over 1.5 Goals’. Gillingham’s impeccable record against bottom-eight teams speaks for itself, as does the fact that Wimbledon have struggled massively away against the current top-half, conceding two or more in eight out of nine, eight of which they’ve lost. Add to that Gillingham’s impressive shots-on-target against rate, along with their record of scoring multiple goals in such home games and backing Evans’ men to continue moving on the up by notching at least twice on route to victory is the way go.
