Gimnastic vs Mallorca Predictions

Having finished a reasonably lowly 14th position last season, Gimnastic would’ve been hoping to challenge higher up the table this time around, though they’ve gone the other way, so much so that even with five games remaining, they’re almost certainly on their way down to the third tier of Spanish football. In contrast, Mallorca, who were promoted from Segunda B last season, are challenging for promotion back to the top flight.

It really is hard to put a positive spin on anything that Gimnastic have done this season; they’ve not scored enough goals, have conceded too many, while they’ve simply not competed often enough to remain in the division. As they’re currently 13 points from safety, Saturday’s hosts are doomed, even if they’re not yet mathematically relegated.

Even in front of a home crowd, Gimnastic haven’t done enough this season, especially from an attacking point of view. Saturday’s hosts have notched just 16 goals in 18 home games this season, which is poor. Unsurprisingly, only one team in the Segunda has scored less goals at home than Gimnastic.

However, as bad as Gimnastic have been from an attacking point of view, they’ve not given away as much as one might think. The all-but-officially-relegated hosts have conceded an average of just 1.18 goals at home this season, while they’ve surrendered an average of just 0.92 expected goals, which is very respectable. If only they’d done more going forward.

Mallorca may be flying high in the second division; they may even win promotion back to the big time, though their overall efforts away from home haven’t been great, especially from in an attacking sense.

Saturday’s visitors have scored in each of their last five on the road, though they average just 0.94 goals for on the road this season, while their average of just 0.98 expected-goals for is hardly menacing. A lack of attacking quality is why Mallorca’s away record is nowhere near as good as their home record. Vicente Moreno’s men have taken 45 points at home, but just 19 on their travels.

From a betting point of view, given the fact that both teams have struggled offensively in their respective home and away games, ‘Under 1.5 Goals’ catches the eye. As the hosts have scored an average of just 0.88 goals at home and as the visitors have scored an average of just 0.94, a very low-scoring affair appears to be more likely than the current odds suggest.
