Hamburg vs Borussia Monchengladbach Predictions

Hamburg’s disappointing 3-0 defeat on the road to Frankfurt last weekend – just their second in six matches (W3 D1 L2) – has the ever-present Bundesliga side suddenly on the brink of losing that status. Hamburg head into the weekend knowing that only a win against Gladbach will be give them a shot at survival, needing Wolfsburg to lose at home to Cologne to make the dream come true. Even then Hamburg would still have to avoid relegation through the two leg play-off match against 3rd place from the Bundesliga 2, so their summer break might have to wait a few more weeks!

Borussia Monchengladbach looked to be back in business after picking up another valuable three points at home to Freiburg last weekend. However, with each of RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and Stuttgart also taking wins, Gladbach only stand an outside chance of qualifying for the UEFA Europa League – the prospect of a second season without European football seems likely. Dieter Hecking has a few of his first team players back from suspension for Saturday, but whether he will go all out or opt for some rotation is still unknown.

So what’s worth backing here? Well, Hamburg coach Christian Titz looks to have found the right formula since taking over at the club seven matches back, with the removal of then core players Walace and Mavraj whipping others into shape (see team news). Hamburg have been in their best scoring form all season over the past few weeks – “der HSV” are averaging around two goals per game at home, a rate on par with some top teams – and it’s easy to see how that has built their confidence on the pitch. Every player is giving just that little bit more every game and as Hamburg midfielder Lewis Holtby put it, “we are finally playing football”.

It would be an understatement to say that Gladbach’s away form is not where it should be too, and defeats away to three of the bottom four – 2-1 to Cologne, 3-0 to Wolfsburg and 1-0 to Freiburg – show exactly how ideal an opportunity this is for the hosts. Hamburg themselves have not been complete pushovers when it comes to facing the top sides on their own turf either, with wins against Schalke (2nd) and Hoffenheim (4th) already recorded at the Volksparkstadion so far this season. Hamburg have nothing to lose here, so this should be a wide open game where both teams could easily get on the score-sheet. And with “der HSV” performing under pressure on the last day in each of the last three seasons too (see statistics), the odds look reasonable on a tight Hamburg win. Our prediction: 2-1 Hamburg.
