Harrogate Town vs Portsmouth Predictions

National League Harrogate welcome League 1’s Portsmouth to Wetherby Road on Monday evening, as they hope for a big win in front of the BT Sport cameras. The visitors will be hoping to win without much of a fuss and thus avoid embarrassment or the need for a replay.

When Harrogate host Pompey on Monday night, they’ll be hoping to reach the second round of this famous competition, which is the furthest they’ve ever been, for the first time since their agonising penalty-shootout defeat back in 2012. To do that they must dig deep and find the strength to overcome a side that is currently 40 places above them in the English league system.

At their own level, Harrogate have done reasonably well this term. They currently sit in a respectable 7th place in the National League and are just four points shy of league leaders Bromley. The Sulphurites have been particularly good at home, where they’ve accumulated the fourth-most points in the division and have conceded the second-fewest number of goals, shipping just eight in ten games.

Beating League 1 opposition won’t be easy, but after keeping a clean sheet in five of their last six National League home games, Harrogate should fancy themselves to frustrate the visitors, who’ve not exactly thrived on the road this term.

At Fratton Park, Portsmouth are a force to be reckoned with in the third division, but their travelling efforts have left plenty to be desired. Kenny Jackett’s men go to Wetherby Road having won just one out of seven on their travels this term, while they’ve scored a measly six goals in doing so.

Given that Portsmouth are operating at a higher level than Monday’s hosts, they really ought to have the required quality to get the job done, though those hoping to see a battering are likely to be disappointed. Harrogate are no mugs, especially on their own patch, where they’ve made a habit of shutting teams out. If we consider this in conjunction with the fact that Pompey have struggled to be at their best offensively on the road, ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ starts to appeal. After all, for all the hosts have impressed defensively, the fact that they’re not among the highest scorers in the National League doesn’t exactly suggest that they’ll do a great deal of damage against League 1 opponents. Moreover, less than three goals have found the net in five of Harrogate’s last six at home, as well as in four of Pompey’s last six on the road.

For those interested in a ‘Correct Score’, a tentative vote is given to a 1-0 win for the visitors. Pompey haven’t set the world alight going forward on their travels in League 1, but they’re not the easiest side to beat, which is why they’ve lost none of their last four in the third division. Against what is expected to be a sturdy home side, the visitors are backed to use their extra quality to edge it.
