Helmond Sport vs AZ Reserves Predictions

Helmond Sport entertain Jong AZ in this bottom of the table clash on Friday evening, and it’s the visitors who appear to hold the strongest claims. Jong have managed to win two of their last six Eerste Divisie games and earned a 0-0 draw against 2nd placed Den Bosch last week, whilst the hosts have lost five on the spin following a 1-0 defeat at Volendam on match day 25.

Jong AZ are still 18th in the table, but there have been some encouraging signs of progress for Michel Vonk’s side in recent weeks.

Whilst they have lost three games so far in 2019, including a 6-2 hammering at Roda JC on match day 22, they managed to beat Cambuur 1-0 in Alkmaar three weeks ago and held promotion chasers Den Bosch to a 0-0 draw at AFAS Stadion last Friday.

The latter result in particular should give Vonk’s young charges a huge shot in the arm and belief that they can be competitive in the second tier and one would expect a confident display from Jong this week against a Helmond Sport side who are in the midst of a lengthy losing spell.

The hosts have now lost five in a row after going down 1-0 at Volendam last week, and are only avoiding bottom spot on goal difference from fellow strugglers Jong Utrecht.

There were signs of life for Sport towards the end of 2018 as they picked up home victories against Jong Utrecht (2-0) and 4th placed Sparta Rotterdam (3-0), but performances have been nowhere near that standard in the New Year with the likes of Dordrecht (1-2), Cambuur (0-1) and MVV (3-0) all bagging three points against Rob Alflen’s side.

So whilst these two teams looked evenly matched in the 2-2 draw they played out in Alkmaar earlier this season, the bookies are potentially underestimating Jong’s chance here, as they are clearly in better shape than their opponents at the moment.

One win from 12 on the road is an obvious point of concern for backers, but we think Jong are excellent value at around the 6/4 mark based on their better performances of late – in particular their tenacious effort against a far superior Den Bosch team a few days ago.

We’re siding with the visitors then to land the spoils in what should be a tight affair, with 1-2 being our correct score prediction.
