Huddersfield vs Aston Villa Predictions

Huddersfield come into this match as ‘odds on’ favourites with the bookies and it’s a big game for them as they look to respond to their defeat to Newcastle on Saturday. With Brighton faltering, automatic promotion is by no means beyond them but this may be a more difficult game than they realise.

A fortnight ago this would have looked like an absolute banker but Villa look to have turned a bit of a corner. They come into this game following three straight league wins for the first time since 2010. Clean sheets in all of those matches would also have pleased Steve Bruce and although the opposition will be tougher here, there’s no reason why Villa can’t get a result. They boast one of the most expensively compiled squads in Championship history and have enough quality to pose Huddersfield problems.

Perhaps the fact they are underdogs may also take some of the pressure off. Villa have nothing really left to play for and can afford to play with a bit of freedom and they could be dangerous opponents for the Terriers. One man who is really starting to find his feet is Conor Hourihane. The midfielder netted against Bristol City last week and initially claimed a goal on Saturday, although it would go down as an own goal. The Irishman now has 7 league goals in total this term and given that, backing Hourihane to score anytime at 6/1 looks like it might be worth a flutter here.

It’d be premature to say Huddersfield are suffering a slump in form but it is just 1 win in 5 games for them coming into this and they haven’t scored more than once in any of those games. In their defence, two of those matches were against Man City but on Saturday, Newcastle’s extra clinical instinct was clear.

The Terriers should completely dominate possession again in this game but Villa have looked tougher to break down in their recent games and they have only conceded 1.09 goals per game on average in the Championship this term. That’s the 2nd best defensive record outside the current top six and it could be a frustrating evening for Huddersfield. David Wagner’s men don’t tend to win big and only 2 of their 20 league wins this term have been by more than a single goal.

Therefore, this should be a close game and a rejuvenated Villa look capable of getting a result so backing Double Chance – Draw or Aston Villa at 10/11 looks to offer value.
