Inverness CT vs Dundee United Predictions

Championship runners-up Dundee United will travel north as they are hosted by Inverness CT at the Caledoian Stadim for the first leg in the Premiership play-offs. Who will take the advantage?

Inverness CT have enjoyed an extremely positive season after the club failed to make it into the promotion places last time around when they finished 5th in the league, with the 2018/2019 campaign seeing them finish 3rd.

The Caley Jags then had to face Ayr United in the first round of play-offs, as they  worked their way back into the Scottish Premiership. The first leg saw John Robertson’s side cruise to an easy 3-1 away from home at Somerset Park, thanks to goals from Charlie Trafford and a Jordan White double.

The 2nd leg of the tie saw Ayr United come into the tie a little bit more when they scored early on in the first half, as the away goal rule does not apply here as it would in European competitions. However, Thistle were able to bring things level with 10 minutes to go, securing their place in the final tie against Dundee United.

United’s long-awaited return to the Scottish Premiership is edging close, but the Tannadice side will first have to beat Caley Thistle in the final play-off tie. The Terrors were unlucky not to win the league, as they challenged eventual winners Ross County until the final few games.

The Championship runners-up had enjoyed a decent run of games going into the final fixtures of the season, with the club beating and drawing with Ross County in the space of 2 weeks to seemingly give way for a title race, but a defeat in the match before drawing with County put that notion to rest.

United went on to win their next trio of games, defeating Ayr United, Inverness CT and then Falkirk, but they failed to score in their 1-0 loss to Greenock Morton on the final day of the season.

Four games are what separates the sides from joining Ross County in the Premiership next season, as the victor of this tie will go on to face St Mirren in what will be the final play-off match. Inverness will boast the home advantage for the first leg, but they can also rest easy knowing that the away goal rule does not apply here. Dundee United finished 9 points ahead of Caley Thistle in the league, and their superiority, on paper, is clear. However, we’re going to back a draw for this tie, with a final score of 1-1 and with everything to play for in the 2nd leg.
