Hosts’ semi-final could go all the way

Ivory Coast and Congo DR look hard to separate ahead of Wednesday’s AFCON semi-final clash in the Elephants’ backyard.

Emerse Fae has overseen a penalty shoot-out win over Senegal and an extra-time success over Mali after taking over mid-way through the tournament.

Both matches finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and it is hard to see another result being as likely as a score draw when these two meet, given three of the Leopards’ five matches at AFCON 2023 have also finished that way.

Goals look likely in Abidjan

Sebastien Desabre’s men enjoyed a 3-1 quarter-final win over Guinea and probably would have scored in the 0-0 group phase clash with Tanzania if they had needed to, but the coach wisely settled for a 0-0 that saw them through in second place.

His tactical acumen could prove crucial here, although his squad is talented enough to stand alongside many of their more illustrious Ivory Coast opponents. They look good value at around 3/1 to pull off a win, but the hosts have benefitted from some fortunate refereeing decisions thus far and may have their name on the trophy.
