Kenya vs Senegal Predictions

After losing their second Africa Cup of Nations group game, Senegal need a victory from Monday’s encounter with Kenya. They are going head to head with the other side in their group with three points on the board, with a win for either side taking them through to the last 16. Both sides have claimed victories over Tanzania so far, but can either of them grab the win they need to ensure they make it through to the next round?

Kenya won a thrilling clash with Tanzania on Thursday, which was a dramatic turn away from their usual style. Kenya made it to this tournament thanks to a very defensive set up, one which is built around Tottenham’s Victor Wanyama. They are likely to revert to a more defensive approach for this clash, as the Harambee Stars go in search of their fourth point of the group stage. Will they be able to frustrate Senegal?

Senegal have a squad capable of challenging for glory in Egypt this summer. However, their talented team suffered a setback last time out. It was a game of few chances, which hurt a Senegal side who are top-loaded. Their obvious issue comes from their mix of great attacking pace and the resulting defensive vulnerabilities, they rely on sitting back to cover up at the back, before hitting their opponents on the counter to cause havoc. However, Algeria showed how to effectively avoid those issues in their last game.

Senegal aren’t a side with just one trick, but they don’t have the most varied attack. Given that they meet a Kenya side who have a defensive system, we don’t expect goals when these two sides go head to head. Kenya lost 2-0 to Algeria in their opener, while they are likely to have issues going forward in this one. Kenya don’t have much in the way of attacking quality, while we see them allowing Senegal a lot of possession.

We struggle to see Kenya making a major impact going forward. Senegal kicked off this group with a 2-0 win over Tanzania – while they won to nil in five of their six qualifiers – so we expect them to be able to shut-out Kenya in this clash. We’re going for Senegal to win to nil on Monday, while we see them edging this tie 1-0.
