KFC Uerdingen 05 vs Borussia Dortmund Predictions

Former-Dortmund right-back Kevin Großkreutz leads a small field of ex-Bundesliga players out to cause a major upset on Friday. KFC Uerdingen 05, who won the DFB Pokal in 84/85 under their previous name Bayer 05 Uerdingen, last played in the Bundesliga in 1995/96, but now reside in the German 3rd tier. Five points from their first four 3. Liga games of the 2019/20 season isn’t too bad a start, but their defensive record doesn’t bode well against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund make the short trip to Dusseldorf – Uerdingen’s temporary home – on a high after dispatching rivals Bayern Munich 2-0 in the German Super Cup on Saturday. Wonderkid Jadon Sancho assisted one and scored the other for the 18/19 Bundesliga runners-up, who have also won all six of their pre-season friendlies by an aggregate score of 14-5. Summer signings Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard and Mats Hummels missed out last weekend so could be rested again for this not so daunting fixture.

Lucien Favre’s side couldn’t really look better ahead of the 19/20 campaign – in fact, we like them to give Bayern a good run for their money in the Bundesliga next season – so it should come as no surprise to hear that we like them to leave Dusseldorf with a result. The four-time DFB Pokal winners were last knocked out in the 1st Round in 2005, and though they had a tough cup run last season, their results earlier stages prior to that show how serious they take the competition – Dortmund won 4-0 in the first round and 5-0 in the second round of the 2017 variation.

Even with World Cup winner Großkreutz at the back, Uerdingen’s defensive record has been poor, conceding two goals or more in each of their last three 3. Liga outings. Against a side as talented as Borussia Dortmund, things can only get worse, and it doesn’t seem unreasonable to expect Dortmund to better that number, particularly given their pre-season form. Going off the above, we like the sound of backing there to be ‘over 3.5 goals’ in this game and a correct score prediction of 4-0 Dortmund.
