Libertad Asuncion vs Gremio Predictions

Friday’’s Copa Libertadores round of 16, second leg action sees Paraguayans Libertad doing battle with Brazilians Gremio at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco. It’s the hosts who have it all to do after a 2-0 defeat in last week’s first leg.

Travelling to Porto Alegre was always going to be a difficult task with Libertad and so it proved, with the Pargauayans putting in a disappointing showing that now has them facing an uphill battle. After topping a group containing Rosario Central, Universidad Catolica and Gremio themselves to reach this point, some had Libertad down as a dark horse in the competition but it’s going to take a special night if they are to progress any further than this.

Nonetheless, all hope won’t be lost and Libertad’s strong recent form gives them every reason to believe they are in with a chance of staging a comeback. Indeed, the hosts have impressively won 6 of their last 7 matches and having also won 4 of their last 5 Libertadores home outings, confidence can be high coming into the game.

Meanwhile, the first leg went as well as Gremio could have hoped for, as they showed excellent resolve to grind out a 2-0 win, despite playing almost a full half with 10 men after defender Geromel was sent off. Well in command in the tie, the visitors take to the Paraguayan capital with only one thing on their minds; holding onto their lead.

After winning the Libertadores back in 2017 and reaching the semi finals last season, Gremio are expected to go far in the competition, but they can’t take this tie as being over and need a fully focused performance. Having won just 2 of their last 9 away games, Tricolor are hardly a powerhouse on their travels and their game plan will almost certainly centre around keeping things tight.

Ultimately, whilst Libertad undoubtedly face a huge task in coming back from such a significant deficit, when looking at this fixture in terms of a 90 minute match, they look the more likely winners. Gremio have no reason to chase a win and it’s Libertad who will likely make far more of the game’s running.

As such, backing Libertad on the Draw No Bet line looks like an excellent way to play as far as the betting is concerned and is exactly where our money is going. The hosts are typically strong at home in Libertadores action and whilst we don’t see them doing enough to advance, we do think they can restore some pride via a 1-0 margin of victory.
