Lokeren vs Genk Predictions

Having finished in fifth place last season, Genk will be hoping to do better this time around. They’ll be looking to get off to the perfect start when visiting Lokeren at Daknamstadion on Sunday evening.

As they finished the regular campaign in 13th position last season, Lokeren will also be looking to improve. Having said that, once the league split, they ended the season in fine form, as they won Europa League Group B, scoring 21 goals and conceding just eleven in the process. Manager Peter Maes will be hoping that his side can replicate such form from an earlier juncture during the new campaign.

Prior to league splitting, Lokeren struggled to really make their mark, especially against the better teams. Sunday’s hosts ended the regular season as the leagues’ second lowest scorers with 33 goals, though they did manage to do better defensively than many of the teams around them.

It’s always going to be hard for a team like Lokeren to challenge the better teams away from home, so it’s imperative that they make the most of their matches on home soil. Although they failed to do that last season, as they won a measly two of their 15 home matches before going into a group of lesser teams in late March. Such form does not bode well ahead of this opening game against a more than useful Genk side, a side that won when they last visited this venue.

Not only did they struggle to get results in general at home, but Lokeren’s record against the top six from the previous campaign is very poor. Liege, Genk, Anderlecht, Gent and Club Brugge all walked away from Daknamstadion with three points, while each of those five teams scored at least twice in doing so.

With Lokeren not exactly being the sort of team known for challenging the top teams, at least not in recent times, it’s fair to say that this a big opportunity for Genk to start the season on the right foot. Even away from home, Philippe Clement’s men ought to fancy their chances.

While Lokeren were poor at home against Belgium’s top teams last season, Genk were more than useful away from home against the lesser sides. Sunday’s visitors secured victory in five of their eight games against teams who finished the regular season in the bottom half.

Genk tended to be strong away against the lesser teams, though they did often concede. Having said that, Lokeren, who scored just 11 goals in 15 home matches last season, struggled to score goals against the top teams, scoring just three goals in six games against the top-six at home last season, so it’s not at all hard to fancy the visitors to overpower their hosts from an offensive point of view.

All things considered, given how the hosts performed at home against the better teams last season, coupled with their lack of forward potency, Lokeren are backed to come up short in their opening fixture.
