Luton vs Southend Predictions

Southend were without a win going into their last fixture, though they’d played well regardless of results, so there was reason to be optimistic as far as manager Chris Powell was concerned. After securing their first win of the new campaign, the Shrimpers will be hoping to build some early-season momentum when they travel to take on Luton at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday evening.

Luton had gone into their third game of the season having played well, even if their result suggested otherwise. The Hatters were desperately unlucky to lose on the opening day, while they held their own against the title favourites on match-day two. However, even with two pleasing results behind them, Nathan Jones’ men were unable to withstand the pressure at ABAX Stadium on Saturday. That said, they shouldn’t be judged too harshly.

Facing Portsmouth, Sunderland, and Peterborough in their first three matches was never going to be easy, so it’s far too early to pass judgement on the team who many people still think will have a good crack at promotion.

They didn’t exactly defend well last weekend, though their overall defensive efforts at this level have just about been better than expected, though it is what they’ve done at the other end of the pitch that has been the disappointment. Luton had a menacing attack in League Two last season, though they’ve scored just two goals this time around. Having said that, their attacking efforts in defeat last time out merited more than the one goal that they did score. If they can deliver a similar performance on their own patch against a Southend team who’re not amazing at the back, then Luton should do well offensively.

One team who has looked menacing going forward this season is Southend. The Shrimpers have played the game on the front foot, have bombarded their opponents with shots and have now scored five goals in three matches. Chris Powell’s men, who’re unlikely to ever be the best defensive side in this division, are looking strong in possession, while they’re certainly creating chances.

Southend’s dominant performance against Bradford at the weekend was impressive, and a repeat of that should see them threaten the hosts on Tuesday night.

From a betting point of view, goals are easy to fancy in this fixture, particularly at the prices. Southend, who’ve managed more shots on target than any other team in this division, aren’t the sort of team to sit back, even on their travels, while Luton, who rank inside the tip eight for shots on target, can also threaten, especially against Southend back-line that has a habit of conceding
