Maastricht vs Ajax Reserves Predictions

A late penalty from Joeri Schroijen secured a long overdue win for MVV against Jong AZ on Friday, and the Maastricht outfit are still in contention to qualify for the Play-offs with three games remaining. However, Ron Elsen’s charges may struggle with the quick turnaround here after a fairly draining battle in Alkmaar, and visitors Jong Ajax will pitch up at De Geusselt fresh after their match day 35 contest with Twente was postponed.

This is only the second occasion this season where the Eerste Divisie teams have to play two games within three days, and MVV will do well to recover from Friday’s exertions against Jong AZ.

Maximum effort was required from Elsen’s side to land a 2-3 victory at AFAS Stadion after twice being pegged back, and it’s unfortunate for them that they come up against a Jong Ajax outfit who avoided an encounter with champions elect Twente on match day 35.

The game at Sportpark De Toekomst was postponed fairly late in the day after fears that too many Twente fans were travelling to Amsterdam, so Jong should be in comparatively better condition here despite having the disruption to deal with.

Taking possible fatigue issues out of the equation, MVV could still be up against it here as Jong Ajax have won three of their last four league matches including a 5-2 success against 3rd placed Go Ahead on match day 34.

Michael Reiziger’s side have also posted three victories from their last four on the road after a cosy 1-3 win against Helmond Sport a fortnight ago and it’s important to remember that they dished out a 0-4 hiding to MVV in last term’s corresponding fixture.

MVV did pinch a 0-1 win in this season’s reverse though which will give them belief here, and although their overall form of late has been poor, it’s distinctly possible that they will raise their game again after Friday’s confidence booster – providing they aren’t spent.

Recent form in the book undoubtedly carries more weight though when assessing this Easter Monday clash and we think that the visitors can edge it at a shade of odds-against.

There’s unlikely to be too much in it as the two point gap between the sides in the table would imply, but Reiziger’s squad will remain extremely keen to impress with call-ups to the thriving senior team a possibility. A win for the visitors could well kill off MVV’s Play-off aspirations, and we think they will do just that at De Geusselt via a 1-2 scoreline.
