Maastricht vs FC Volendam Predictions

After notching five league victories on the spin, MVV are now without a win in four Eerste Divisie games but they will head into this Friday’s contest at De Geusselt in better heart than Volendam after fighting back from 2-0 down to earn a draw away at Roda JC last week. Volendam have now lost three in a row after being turned over 0-1 by Cambuur on match day 30, and their Play-off chances will be all but over if they fail to land three points here in Maastricht.

Following a 1-4 home defeat to RKC on match day 29, MVV were pretty dismal once again for the majority of their fixture against Roda JC at Parkstad Limburg Stadion last week and looked down and out after the Kerkrade outfit established a two goal lead.

But influential winger Joeri Schroijen took charge for his side and supplied two assists for Anthony van den Hurk and Jordi Croix who both hit the net to force a 2-2 draw.

It was a crucial point for MVV to salvage, and whilst they dropped down to 10th and out of the Play-off places, they remain level on points with both Cambuur and Roda who are immediately above them in the table.

This feels like a must win match for MVV though as they need to keep pace with just four points separating 6th placed Oss and 14th placed Almere City. A couple more fixtures without a win could see Ron Elsen’s charges fall out of contention and that would be a major shame considering the fine run which they put together at the start of this year.

The hosts will be seeking revenge after losing a 3-2 thriller at Kras Stadion in November’s reverse fixture and they will fancy their chances as Volendam have been performing well below the standard they set when Hans De Koning took charge a few months ago.

Palingboeren are without a win in five following last week’s 0-1 loss at home to Cambuur and they were mauled 5-0 by leaders Twente when last on the road a fortnight ago. They have won just three times of their travels this term and have conceded 29 goals at a rate of almost two per game.

After MVV’s resurgent last 20 minutes at Roda, we feel the hosts are the most likely winners in this one, but we’re reluctant to pile in at short odds based on their overall form of late.

One thing we can probably be certain of is goals as these two sides often produce exciting contests when they meet. The last eight encounters have produced over 2.5 goals with both teams scoring, so that’s what we’re tipping up here alongside a 3-1 correct score prediction in favour of the hosts.
