Macclesfield vs Grimsby Predictions

It was an exciting start to life in League Two for Macclesfield, who lost 3-2 away to Swindon Town in the most dramatic of fashions. After being 2-1 up coming into the 90th minute, the team conceded two penalties to give the game away to Swindon and deny themselves a win in their first League Two match in five years.

However, there were a lot of positives to take away from the game. The performance of striker Koby Arthur was largely positive, as he grabbed two goals to suggest he can score regularly at this level for the team. On the other hand, he did concede the penalty that allowed Swindon the chance to win the game.

Generally, Macclesfield will be happy with the fact they competed well with one of the teams considered one of the biggest in the league and will give them confidence that they can produce good performances against other teams. With Mark Yates in charge as well, they have a manager who knows not only how to compete in this league but also to achieve well in it. Although, they will have to significantly raise their game after goalkeeper Rhys Taylor kept in the game, with Swindon also hitting the woodwork three times.

The team have signed new players that should play a bigger role in the game against Grimsby. In particular, winger Malachi Napa has arrived from Oxford on loan and his exciting brand of play should provide a creative spark in attack. He only came on the 82nd minute against Swindon but should get more in this game.

In contrast to Macclesfield’s loss, Grimsby suffered an embarrassing afternoon at home to Forest Green Rangers, in a performance that will concern the fans greatly.

Although they took the lead through a first half penalty, the team then conceded four times to make it a torrid opening day for the club. What will most concern the manager is the defensive lapses suffered, as two of the goals came straight from wayward back-passes. However, manager Michael Jolley appeared to dismiss those mistakes, rather believing that it was worse to see the team deviate from a passing-focused style of play he has tried to implement over the summer.

There could also be a raft of changes to refresh the team after that humbling defeat. In particular, new signing Charles Vernam from Derby County could play a larger part after arriving permanently following a loan spell last season. He came on in the 71st minute and will be hoping to have a larger role in this game.

With both teams conceding a lot of goals in their first game, we think there will be goals at both ends in this match as well in what should be an entertaining match between two teams who will likely be in the bottom half of the table come the end of the season. In addition, neither team looked convincing enough to win in the last game and we think this trend could continue with a Draw in this game as well. As there could be numerous goals, a 2-2 correct score would reflect the team’s open defences.
