Mariupol vs Djurgarden Predictions

This is one of the most finely poised of the UEFA Europa League 2nd Qualifying Round ties. Djurgarden travel to Ukraine this Thursday to take on Mariupol as the favourites to progress, despite failing to make home advantage pay last week. The winners of this will most likely go on to face Bordeaux in the next round so that will be tough with the Ligue 1 side certainly targeting at least the group stage.

The 1st Leg in Sweden last week ended in a 1-1 draw, which raises optimism in the Mariupol camp heading into this. It could have been even better though. They led 1-0 through Sergey Yavorskiy’s goal and were only pegged back in the final minute when Aliou Badji netted a crucial leveller for the Swedes.

Djurgarden are still the favourites at around 21/20 to win this match in 90 minutes with the bookies and they are certainly in much the better form. They are unbeaten in 13 games now, including a few mid-season friendlies and are going pretty well in the Swedish Allsvenskan, where they currently sit in 4th place heading into the second half of the season.

Mariupol by contrast can’t buy a win at home, which makes their performance last week all the more surprising. They’ve lost their opening two games in the new Ukrainian league season and are now without a win in 9 competitive matches overall. This is only their second season in Europe so the opportunity to play at home in European competition is a big one but it will take place in Odessa rather than their home city due to the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine.

It’s a tough one to call and it’s hard to see either side running away with this. The Swedes may be marginally the stronger side and are certainly the form team but this will be a real test of their character and they have made a habit of drawing rather than winning games of late. 4 of their last 6 have ended level and they come into this one following back-to-back 1-1 draws.

Mariupol have been even more prone to drawing matches. 7 of their last 11 matches have finished up all square (including friendlies). All of those draws involved 1-1 scorelines and their first league game of this season was also heading that way until a late goal granted Zorya a 2-1 win.

Therefore we have plenty of reason to fancy backing the Draw here and there also looks to be value in backing a 1-1 Draw in the Correct Score market.
