Mexico vs Chile Predictions

Mexico had a great start to 2018 under Juan Carlos Osorio, with some solid form carrying them into the World Cup where their 1-0 beating of holders Germany made many sit up and realise the talent they have at their disposal. Their squad is extremely talented, with quality in every section of the pitch; Guillermo Ochoa has proved a fantastic servant for them in goal, Edson Álvarez is an extremely exciting prospect currently part of a very successful América side and Javier Hernández still to this day remains one of the most clinical poachers in world football. Throw in some more exciting players like Diego Lainez, Hirving Lozano and Raúl Jiménez and you have yourself a pretty stacked national team.

Their new manager Gerardo Martino has a wealth of ability at his fingertips but he is still to prove if he can mould them into a clinical unit, with this upcoming game set to be his first in charge. Martin was named MLS Coach of the Year and led Argentina to two Copa América finals in 2015 and 2016 so he does carry some pedigree but has quite the challenge on his hands, given Mexico’s recent form. They lost seven of their last eight matches in 2018 and are in dire need of a confidence boost, it remains to be seen if Martino can deliver that.

Chile’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup for many signalled the end of their ‘golden generation’ that won them two Copa Américas between 2015 and 2016. Reinaldo Rueda has been tasked with building the next generation but results haven’t exactly been encouraging so far during his 15 months in charge. They have won four of the ten games under Rueda but despite their 13th place standing in the FIFA World Rankings, they have suffered some poor results, such as their defeats to Costa Rica (37th, 2-3), Peru (20th, 0-3) and Romania (25th, 2-3) plus their draw with South Korea (38th, 0-0). They have picked up wins over the likes of Serbia, Sweden and their upcoming opponents Mexico but these performances just haven’t come on a regular enough basis.

Chile has quite a few old heads that have been stalwarts of the national team for many years, with Gary Medel, Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal being prime examples of this. Some of the slightly younger exciting talents are Nicolás Castillo and Guillermo Maripán. The former recently joined América after six months in Benfica and has already scored four goals in his seven league games. Guillermo Maripán is also a quality player with him a crucial part of Alavés’ high-flying squad in La Liga. Maripán has started Chile’s last six games and with him on a run of 15 consecutive starts for Alavés, his confidence should be sky high ahead of this match.

Neither side are on great run of form but with Mexico’s superior squad and excitement ahead of Martino’s first game in charge, we’re backing the hosts to nick this one. Gerardo Martino’s Atlanta team were always known for great attacking football during his time in charge with them, hitting the 70 goal mark twice in his two years in charge. We think he should be able to bring this to Mexico due to his plethora of talent. Chile have kept just one clean sheet in their last six games. Mexico also don’t have a great defence with no clean sheets in their last nine matches so we’re backing both teams to score, given Chile scored six goals in their last two games. We’re backing Mexico to win 2-1 to kick off Martino’s stint in charge.
