Monterrey vs Leon Predictions

Saturday’s Liga MX Clausura action sees Monterrey doing battle with Leon. It’s the hosts who arrive as big favourites and are expected to claim the 3 points with very few issues.

After losing in the play-offs at the semi-final stage in the Apertura, Monterrey certainly set their stall out in the closing phase opener last weekend, hammering Pachuca 5-0 at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer. With one of the strongest squads in the division, Los Rayados are one of the front runners to secure the Clausura title and will be looking for another win here to aid said quest.

Confidence can certainly be sky high in doing exactly that, with Monterrey a real powerhouse in front of the home crowd. They’ve now won 7 straight home league matches, conceding just two goals in the process and also unbeaten in 8 matches against Leon, 6 of which wins, Diego Alonso’s troops have no need to approach the game with any sort of apprehension.

The same cannot be said for Leon, who are trying to improve on a terrible 14th placed finish in the Apertura. However, having lost key forward Mauro Boselli to Corinthians, that looks a big ask and whilst the visitors kicked things off with a reasonable solid 2-2 draw with Tigres last weekend, they face a huge test on Saturday.

Having lost 1-0 to lower league Alebrijes de Oaxaca on home soil in the cup during midweek, Leon are now winless in 7 straight matches and have very little momentum behind them. That’s a big worry coming into such a difficult game and realistically, it’d be a huge surprise if they were able to go home with any kind of result.

As such, backing a Monterrey win is something we’re more than happy to do with maximum confidence and we cannot envisage them slipping up. Man for man, they’re by far a better team than Leon and given the regularity with which they beat their visitors, it should be a routine win for the hosts.

Also capturing our attention is the home win to nil and at current price that looks well worth a play. Monterrey rarely concede on home soil, or in general, given they’ve let just 1 goal in over their last 5 matches and taking into account that Leon have just lost their most prolific forward, a 2-0 Monterrey win could well be on the cards; the same scoreline by which they beat Leon in the opening phase.
