Motherwell vs Morton Predictions

As expected, Motherwell made light work of beating Queen of the South first time out. Having won their first League Cup match by three goals to nil, the Scottish Premiership side will come into this home game against Championship opposition feeling confident.

A trip to face Queen of the South probably wasn’t the most testing start for Motherwell, though as the old saying goes, you can only beat what’s in front of you. Steve Robinson’s men did just that.

It took them a while to break the resistance of their Championship opponents, but their superiority was there for all to see, as they enjoyed 67% of the ball, with which they managed to muster 16 shots, four of which hit the target. Offensively, as they created plenty of chances and scored three goals, the Premiership side showed their quality, while they did a good job of limiting their opponents to few opportunities, conceding just two shots on target and keeping a clean sheet.

Morton also enjoyed themselves on match-day one by taking full advantage of facing opposition from the division below. After winning by six goals to one against Dumbarton, Greenock will come into this game feeling good, though facing Motherwell will be much, much tougher. Quite frankly, if the Premiership side can easily get the better of Queen of the South, who ply their trade at the same level as Friday’s visitors, on the road, then they really ought to have the quality required to get the better of Morton at Fir Park.

From a betting point of view, ‘Motherwell -1 Handicap’ stands out. Not only does Motherwell’s performance against Championship opposition last time out suggest that they can win by a clear margin, but Friday’s hosts have plenty of strong form at home in this competition. Last season, they beat both Queen of South and Edinburgh City by at least two goals at this venue, while they also beat Morton by four goals to nil at Fir Park back in 2017. Add in the fact that the visitors have lost each of their last three on the road in this competition, conceding nine goals in the process, and backing Motherwell, who since 2017 have only conceded against Celtic at home in this competition, to record a convincing win looks the way to go.
