Newells Old Boys vs Independiente Predictions

Saturday’s Superliga Argentina action sees Independiente making the trip to Rosario to face off with Newell’s Old Boys. A close game is expected to be in order with the visitors set to ring the changes.

Newell’s campaign really couldn’t have got off to a worse start last weekend as they crashed to a 2-0 defeat away at Velez Sarsfield. La Lepra are not in any real immediate danger of relegation on the average points table thanks to their 9th placed finish in the 16/17 season but after finishing 22nd last campaign, they’ll find themselves in big trouble next season if they have yet another poor year.

In last season’s Superliga, Newell’s felt the losses of the likes of Maxi Rodriguez, Mauro Formica and Ignacio Scocco hard. Formica has since returned but the squad still looks short on quality and carried over their miserable away record from last season, in which they lost 10 of the 13 games contested, in the aforementioned defeat to Velez. Nonetheless, having lost just 3 times at home last campaign and having lost just 1 of their last 7 outings at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa, confidence should still be fairly high coming into this clash.

Meanwhile, Independiente’s scheduled opener last weekend was cancelled so that El Rojo could travel to Japan to contest the Suruga Bank Championship final and having returned home with the trophy after defeating Cerezo Osaka 1-0, there’s a good feeling in visiting ranks at the moment.

Independiente have transformed into a real force over the last year and a half since boss Ariel Holan came in. They play some of the most progressive football in Argentina and having came 6th last season in addition to lifting the Copa Sudamericana, the side are clearly a very powerful outfit. Nonetheless, with the first leg of a last 16 Copa Libertadores tie with Brazilians Santos to come in midweek, a heavily rotated eleven is set to be fielded and that will affect the visitors chances of claiming the 3 points.

Ultimately, if Independiente were playing with their regular side, we’d be more than happy to back them but wholesale changes mean that Newell’s look like having the chance to end their terrible four match losing run against their opponents.

We like the look of backing the draw at more than reasonable odds. Newell’s were very poor last weekend but are normally competitive on home soil, whereas Independiente have displayed plenty of resolve on the road under Holan, losing just twice on enemy territory last season. Independiente’s second string still possess plenty of quality and is unlikely to lose to a less than inspiring Newell’s team and we can envisage the contest ending 1-1.
