Nice vs Amiens Predictions

Nice did rather well under Patrick Vieira last season with them achieving 7th place despite losing talisman Mario Balotelli half way through the campaign. Vieira showed himself to be a very astute manager with his team showing to be an incredibly defensive unit. They conceded the second least number of goals with just 35 going past Walter Benitez. The back three of Dante, Christophe Hérelle and Malang Sarr proved to be one of the best back-lines in France but this focus on defence definitely hindered their attack.

They scored just 30 goals, the third least tally in the league and the club haven’t done much yet to rectify that. Their most exciting attacker Allan Saint-Maximin just left for Newcastle and with 18-year-old defensive midfielder Khéphren Thuram being their only acquisition of the summer, we shouldn’t be expecting too many goals from le Gym this season.

Their pre-season has been disastrous though as the team have looked a shadow of their former selves. They conceded 22 goals in their seven friendlies with Burnley scoring six and Wolfsburg racking up eight. These performances were extremely out of sorts for Nice and are quite worrying for fans ahead of this opening day affair. Amiens will look at them with intrigue.

Amiens’ pre-season has been rather so-so with varying results. They managed to generate some positivity with their wins over Hull and Boulougne but the defeat to Ligue 2 side Valenciennes was rather poor. They finished off with a tight 1-0 defeat to La Liga’s Leganés though which isn’t a bad result for a team expecting to fight relegation this year.

A series of new faces have come to the club including a new manager with Luka Elsner taking over the reigns from Christophe Pélissier who left to coach FC Lorient. The 37-year-old Slovenian hasn’t got the most lucrative CV with spells managing in the Belgian Second Division and Cyprus but the former defender with undoubtedly approach this role with determination considering that it will be his first stint in a top five league.

He has been backed by the board with them shelling out almost £15m on players, the most the club have ever spent in a single window. Their key signing is Serhou Guirassy who impressed on loan from Köln last season. He contributed to four goals in 13 appearances last season, showing a good partnership with main striker Moussa Konaté. The club will be hoping that he can really kick on now that he has joined permanently.

On paper this match seems in favour of Nice who finished 7th last year but Amiens’ pre-season form has been much better so we’re backing them to take something away from this match. None of the last three clashes between these sides have seen over 2.5 goals or both teams score and with both teams so poor in the final third last year, we’re backing that to continue. Neither side scored goals for fun in pre-season and with no wholesale changes being made to change that, we’re going to back this one to finish 0-0. However, with Amiens’ encouraging summer and Nice’s out of sorts performances, we’re also going to back a double chance bet in favour of the visitors.
