Northampton vs Cambridge United Predictions

After being relegated from League One last year, Northampton Town will have been hoping for a better start to life in League Two.

They lost at home on opening day, to fellow promotion contenders Lincoln City, who held on to win 1-0 despite Northampton having the lion’s share of the chances and possession. In their following match, they managed to claim their first point of the season, drawing 2-2 away to Carlisle United in an exciting match. Whilst they held League One Wycombe Wanderers to an away draw in the Carabao Cup, they were knocked out on penalties to ensure a winless start to the campaign.

However, there have been several positives to take from the performances. Northampton have shown good attacking prowess in all three of the matches and probably deserved better had it not been for poor finishing and great goalkeeping displays by the opposition.

In particular, there is growing promise between the strike partnership of Andy Williams and Kevin Van Veen, which could develop into something better that fires Northampton up the table. With new signing Junior Morais returning from injury in mid-week, the club could have a potent attacking force to try and win games with.

Cambridge United suffered a worse opening day than Northampton, and whilst there was a positive result in the following game, the midweek display against Newport in the Carabao Cup was worrying.

On the opening day of the season, Cambridge lost 3-0 to Port Vale after a dominant display by the home side. Although the team had chances, they did not put them away and suffered the consequences. Their following match was in contrast to this however, as they beat promotion favourites Notts County at home in an enthralling match. They won 3-2 with an injury time goal by target-man Barry Corr and this will give the club great confidence that they can do well in this league.

Although, they  were outclassed by Newport County at home in the Carabao Cup in midweek. With a strong side, they were lacklustre and got beat 4-1 to tumble out of the competition. Whilst not a priority, it will still concern manager Joe Dunne at the lack of competitiveness with a fellow League Two side.

A highlight for the club though has been the form of attacker Ade Azeez. After not scoring last season, he has scored three already and looks a threat every time he plays.

With both sides possessing good attacking players and with most of them in form, we could see a really exciting game on Saturday. That is why we think this game could see “Over 3.5 Goals”.

To predict a correct score, we think Northampton could make use of home advantage and pick up their first win of the season in 3-2 win against a Cambridge United side who will certainly put up a fight.
