      Nurnberg vs Borussia Monchengladbach Predictions

For most of the campaign, Nurnberg have lingered at the foot of the table, though with just two games to go, there’s still a slim chance that Saturday’s hosts could beat the drop. If they beat Gladbach and Stuttgart fail to get the better of Wolfsburg, then avoiding automatic relegation would still be a possibility for Boris Schommers’ men ahead of the final day.

For all it’s been a poor campaign, Nurnberg come into this match having played well at home of late. Not only have they played well but they’ve collected some very encouraging results, results that should fill them with confidence ahead of Saturday’s clash. Schommers’ side held league leaders and likely champions Bayern to a draw when last in action at Max-Morlock-Stadion, while they dominated Schalke when drawing 1-1 prior to that. Before a pair of draws, Nurnberg battered Augsburg by three goals to nil at this venue, so there’s plenty of recent form for them to build on.

They may be down at the wrong end of the table, but Nurnberg really haven’t been pushovers at home this season. They’ve only lost six of their 16 home matches, which is no more than Gladbach have lost on the road, while they’ve rarely been embarrassed when playing on their own patch. Saturday’s hosts have only lost by more than a single goal on three occasions at home this season. Only one of those three defeats came after the winter break.

In addition, Nurnberg boast a reasonably respectable set of underlying numbers at home. They only average 1.0 goals for and 1.12 expected goals for, though they’ve only surrendered averages of 1.12 and 1.27, so they’re not terribly easy to get at.

Gladbach are fighting for a place in Europe, but they’ve been anything but impressive since the winter break. Last time out on the road, Saturday’s visitors were beaten 1-0 by Stuttgart, who like Nurnberg are struggling towards the foot of the table.

Dieter Hecking’s men, who’ve won none of their last three, have also struggled to impose themselves away from home. They’ve scored in four of their last five travelling matches, though they’ve not scored more than once during that time, while they’ve only notched two or more in one of their last ten on the road.

If we add in the fact that Gladbach average just 1.13 expected goals for and just 1.25 goals for on their travels, not to mention the fact that they’ve shipped an average of 1.55 expected goals, which is more than Nurnberg have conceded at home, it becomes relatively easy to make a case for the hosts at the current prices.

Nurnberg certainly haven’t been good this season, but they’ve performed well at home of late, while their overall efforts at home have been no worse than Gladbach’s on the road. On this basis, the hosts look overpriced and are thus worth supporting to get a positive result.
