Oldham sinking without trace

A run of five successive losses and seven league games without a win has Oldham Athletic headed for relegation to the National League. John Sheridan’s fourth spell as Latics boss is shaping up to be an unhappy chapter in his long association with the club, and the visit of playoff-chasing Mansfield may not offer much hope this weekend.

Mansfield have won 17 of their last 24 games, and although Nigel Clough’s side have risen into promotion contention primarily because of their superb home record, the Stags should be considered hot favourites. Since mid-November, only promotion-chasing outfits Tranmere Rovers and Port Vale, alongside Championship side Middlesbrough, have beaten Clough’s men in all competitions.

Oldham, meanwhile, have lost five games in succession, three of them on home turf and two against bottom-half opponents. Oldham’s record of just four wins from 18 games at Boundary Park represents the second-worst home return in the division, with only rock-bottom Scunthorpe performing worse on home turf, and Mansfield, two points shy of a playoff place, will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing Sheridan’s men.

Visitors can push Latics closer to the brink

Oldham may only be three points from safety, but their dire form suggests that their survival hopes may be forlorn, and Mansfield will be in no mood to give them a helping hand on Saturday afternoon.
