Osasuna vs Real Oviedo Predictions

It’s long been known that Osasuna were on the way up and we’ve now known for a couple of weeks that they’re going up as champions. Their season is thus done and dusted, though they may still want to treat their fans to one last Segunda win before re-entering La Liga. In contrast, Oviedo still have everything left to fight for, as they’re two points short of a place in the play-offs. For the visitors to finish in the top six, they need to go to El Sadar and win, and hope that both Depor and Cadiz fail to win. It’s a big ask but it’s certainly not impossible.

All round, Osasuna have been solid this season, but their promotion is largely down to their extraordinary home form. With just one game left, Saturday’s hosts are unbeaten in front of a home crowd, as they’ve won 18, drawn two and lost none of their 20 league matches at El Sadar. Going forward, they’ve got the job done having scored 33 goals, while they’ve been excellent at the back too, as they’ve shipped just seven goals (an average of just 0.37 per game).

The basic stats tell us that Osasuna have been immense on home soil, while the underlying numbers also paint a pretty picture. On their own patch, the champions average 1.53 expected goals for, while they’ve surrendered an average of just 0.74.

While Osasuna have been outstanding in front of their own fans, Real Oviedo have generally struggled to be at their best on the road. Not only have Saturday’s visitors lost more games than they’ve won away from home, losing ten and winning seven, but they’ve also conceded more goals than they’ve scored, notching 18 and conceding 25.

From a performance point of view, Oviedo haven’t been terrible on their travels, far from it, though they have been a tad underwhelming. They’ve surrendered a more than respectable average of 1.07 expected goals, though they only average 1.0 going the other way. They also concede, on average, more shots than they take when playing away from home.

Moreover, Oviedo’s recent efforts on the road against the better sides are slightly worrying. The lost 3-0 away against Malaga recently, posting just 0.78 expected goals for and conceding 1.7. They also delivered a similarly weak effort when losing away against Gijon, while they failed to register a single shot when losing away against Mallorca prior to that.

All things considered, it’s easy to go against the visitors ahead of this match. It may not be essential for the hosts to win, but their home performances have simply been considerably better than Oviedo’s efforts on the road, so much so that they look a good price to register a 19th home win of the season.
