Oxford United vs Fleetwood Town Predictions

Oxford’s season got off to the worst possible start last weekend, as they lost by four goals to nil away at Barnsley. After such a disappointing opening day, Karl Robinson’s men will be looking to pick themselves up by winning in front of a home crowd.

There were several hard luck stories on match-day one, though Oxford’s defeat wasn’t one of them. Karl Robinson’s men, who should do well this season, failed to land a blow on a Barnsley team who simply ran away with proceedings at Oakwell. An away match against the team who’re likely to be bang there at the top come May was never going to be easy, though it’s fair to say that Oxford didn’t exactly make things hard for the hosts, who had things all their own way offensively.

It is of course very early days, so Oxford should not be written off just because they failed to compete with a strong Barnsley side, though the fact that the U’s couldn’t really impose themselves on the game offensively was disappointing, while the less said about their defensive efforts the better. However, this home match against Fleetwood provides Robinson’ men with an opportunity to get their season up and running.

Like Oxford, Fleetwood came off second best on the opening day, and like their hosts on this occasion, they failed to really impose themselves on the game. However, they struggled against a different type of opponent. AFC Wimbledon are not an easy team to face, though they are unlikely to be up in the higher echelons of the division come the end of the campaign, so it was disappointing that Fleetwood failed to compete at both ends of the pitch.

They saw plenty of the ball and did have one or two promising moments, though the closest they came to scoring was when Bobby Grant hit the post from distance. Aside from that, Joey Barton’s men failed to really create, while they looked very open at the back. To put it lightly, a better attacking team than Wimbledon, or at least a team with more end-product, would’ve scored three or four against a back-line that looked very open.

It’s fair to say that neither team covered themselves in glory last weekend, though, while Oxford can perhaps be excused for failing to turn up on the road against a top team, it was Fleetwood, by defending poorly against a Wimbledon side that narrowly avoided the drop last season, who created the more negative impression with their opening-day performance.

On their own patch, Oxford, who weren’t short of goals at Kassam last season, ought to be capable of getting far more threatening offensively. After all, they certainly have the personnel to do so. Saturday’s hosts, who ranked inside the top five for shots on target at home during the previous campaign, adopted an attacking style at home last season, so it’s easy to envisage them causing Fleetwood’s rear-guard plenty of problems on Saturday, especially if the Trawlermen are as open.
