Peru vs Colombia Predictions

  • Peru beat Colombia 2-1 last month, but Los Cafeteros were the better side.
  • Colombia have won four of the last seven head-to-head meetings with Peru (Drawn 2, lost 1)
  • Peru have failed to score in five of the last seven meetings between the two.

Colombia to maintain dominance over Peru in play-off

Peru take on Colombia in the Copa America’s third-place play-off on Saturday with more than just national pride at stake.

The difference in prizemoney for the two semi-final losers is a million US dollars with the third-placed outfit earning 8m to the losers 7m take-home pay.

Peru were unable to retread their path to the final of two years ago when they lost 1-0 to Brazil on Tuesday morning.

Although there has been some postgame controversy about no VAR review of a Blanquirroja penalty shout, Ricardo Gareca’s side didn’t create enough to seriously trouble the holders.

Colombia’s stuttering run to the semis was ended by the same method from which they got there – penalties.

Los Cafeteros mustered nine shots on target in the 90 minutes, but none of them ever looked like troubling Emi Martinez who saved spot-kicks after the final whistle.

With neither protagonist able to offer much against the fancied teams in their semis it is hard to envisage a high-scoring play-off unfolding.

When these teams met in the group stage it finished 2-1 to Peru, who needed a Yerry Mina own goal to claim a vital three points.

Colombia’s stats were better that day and those that put great store in ‘expected goals’ will attest that they were the more deserving side, so we can understand why Reinaldo Rueda’s team are favourites for Saturday’s rematch.

Recent history between the sides also points to a Colombia victory with La Tricolor having won four of their past seven meetings.

Peru haven’t scored in five of those games so we are settling on a 1-0 correct score prediction – also because Colombia are yet to score more than one goal in a game all tournament.
